MetaMusic launches its tool and a new website!

Today, MetaMusic presents the public beta version 1.0 of its music metadata management tool.  Our goal has always been and remains clear: to simplify the management, indexing and distribution of metadata for everyone, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your work, the discoverability of Canadian music, and to maximize royalties for our creators and artists…

The result is a unique system that integrates information that historically resided in multiple systems with no direct links between them.  The contribution of many of you along this complex path has allowed us to identify your needs clearly and to develop functionalities that are useful and relevant today but also adaptable and flexible to keep pace with future developments in music creation and the industry! With MetaMusic, you can take back control of your metadata to ensure that what once went into the record sleeve is now well documented on the Internet!

MetaMusic 1.0

MetaMusic simplifies the new release process and the management of metadata and registrations. You’ll save time, avoid errors, and have complete, detailed metadata from the start. This makes it easier to index your albums and get them online with reliable, transparent to all contributors, and interoperable data!

From now on, you can use MetaMusic to

  • create your individual and corporate accounts and integrate all unique identifiers so you can centralize them and never have to search for them again
  • document all your new releases with complete metadata
  • import your SOCAN catalogues of works to associate credits for works and sound recordings
  • Make SOPROQ and Artisti registrations, which will soon be joined by BAnQ legal deposit, and export your metadata for referencing.
The launch of a new release with and without MetaMusic

In addition to these essential features, MetaMusic has listened to the testers we’ve met over the past year. We are more than aware of the short term inconvenience of a change in practice. But we’re convinced of the overall benefits of MetaMusic, and that’s why we’ve redoubled our efforts over the last few months to simplify significantly:

  • The onboarding and mobilization processes: You can now collect all your collaborators’ information in an Excel file to create batch accounts and start using MetaMusic to its full potential! This is possible for any organization, find out how now!
  • Complete import of your SOCAN catalogues in a few clicks for all types of works, regardless of collaborators. What’s more, MétaMusique identifies invalid works in your catalogue.
  • Reuse information: You can now copy similar information from one recording to another, further reducing redundant data entry.
  • Copy lyrics from work to recording: Once a work is associated with a recording, its lyrics can be copied and customized as needed! Moreover, to maximize the benefits and make your life even easier, MetaMusic is already preparing an integration with Evangeline that will allow you to switch from one system to the other.  More details to follow.

For version 1.0, our focus is on new releases (albums, EPs, singles) that have not yet been declared.

You can, nonetheless, document all your other recent releases if you have mobilized all your creators and collaborators. For producers and labels with more extensive catalogues of sound recordings and releases, massive import tools are on the MetaMusic drawing board.

What’s next? A team and tools to get you started

The MetaMusic team is here to help you as you discover and use our tool. To get started on your own right away, you can also consult our online tools:

Our small team will continue to update and improve these tools over the coming weeks to answer your questions and make your experience as easy as possible. The new metamusique.ca website, developed in collaboration with the “Les Prétentieux” agency, will become your reference point for better understanding metadata, how to use it and how to use the tool for your releases, declarations and referencing.

In addition to these self-service tools, MetaMusic will offer you several ways of getting to grips with the tool.

A new service offer to outsource your release to us

MetaMusic will announce a new service offer for labels and producers in January to speed up your organization’s system implementation. This offer allows you to entrust us with documenting your releases in MetaMusic and making the associated declarations at a competitive cost. The details of this offer will be presented on January 23rd during a free MetaMusic presentation organized by ADISQ and open to all. Reserve your place now (in French)!

This is just the beginning!

MetaMusic is already planning what’s next! Our ambition to become the gateway or convergence point for music metadata in Quebec and Canada guides our vision and development. We are currently planning our next steps, including developing legal deposit with BAnQ. This will create a link that will benefit creators, artists, labels, producers, and BAnQ, and it will be a model of its kind.

We also have several ongoing discussions with other industry partners to further develop our “Rosetta Stone” model of music metadata.  We are in discussions with government agencies, media, funders and distributors to add value, simplify processes and give you more control over your metadata and discoverability.
